Between 2017 and 2019 we collected monthly scats samples to help update the diet of Cape fur seals that haul out on Robberg Peninsula. Volunteers from the ORCA Foundation assisted us with preliminary processing of many samples which are now all stored with our research collaborator at the Port Elizabeth Museum for future analysis. Data will be compared to results from previous studies to examine any recent changes in seal diet as an indication of changes in prey availability. It will also aid in future studies examining the role of seals in the Agulhas Current and their interactions/competition with fisheries. This research is especially important in terms of recent changes that have taken place in the Agulhas Current ecosystem (i.e. shifts in the distribution of pelagic fish species and fishing effort).
