In 2018 we set up a land-based observational study with a main focus on monitoring white sharks and Cape fur seals in Robberg MPA. With ongoing logistical support from the ORCA Foundation, trained field assistants and volunteers assist us in the field by performing year-round dedicated cliff-top surveys from various designated monitoring sites located along the north face of Robberg Peninsula. Volunteer observers record environmental conditions and the presence and behaviour of various pinniped and elasmobranch (shark and ray) species, but also whales, dolphins, penguins, fishes, tourism vessels and shore anglers within the Robberg Marine Protected Area. The data is currently being used to study the seasonal aggregation of white sharks and their interactions with Cape fur seals at this unique location.
